The world’s favourite 25 museums revealed

The results are in and two London institutions have carved out coveted spots on TripAdvisor’s annual list of the world’s favourite museums.

Based on the ‘quality and quantity’ of reviews penned by users on the travel advice website this year’s list of twenty-five features what some might consider surprising results. In 10th place is London’s Victoria & Albert Museum (V&A) followed in 11th place by London’s National Gallery.

They outranked the Musée du Louvre in Paris (13th place) and Florence’s Uffizi Gallery (16th), which is home to Botticelli’s ‘Birth of Venus’ and Titian’s ‘Venus of Urbino’. The top spots on the 2017 list were secured by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York (1st place), the National WWII Museum in New Orleans (2nd place) and Paris’ Musée d’Orsay (3rd). The Met is the only museum to have won 1st place three years in a row.

Tripadvisor has also published its list of the  top ten museums by region. In the United Kingdom, the V&A takes out the top spot followed by the National Gallery, British Museum, Natural History Museum and Churchill War Rooms. At number 10, last place goes to the Imperial War Museum.

Putting paid to the suggestion that Da Vinci’s ‘Mona Lisa’ attracts all the tourist attention it turns out the Musée d’Orsay is France’s favourite museum. Italy has awarded the top honour to the Egyptian Museum of Turin while Croatia’s favourite is the Museum of Broken Relationships in Zagreb.
