The Metropolitan Museum of Art (Met) in New York has announced that they will be returning 16 sculptures to Cambodia and Thailand. The works have been associated with known antiquities smuggler Douglas Latchford, who was indicted in 2019 prior to his death in 2020. Latchford was a dealer who was charged with “running a vast antiquities trafficking network” in southeast Asia.

New York’s Met Museum transfers ownership of two objects back to Yemen
The Metropolitan Museum in New York has announced that the ownership of two objects in their collection is being transferred to the Republic of Yemen. In what has been described as a “custodial agreement”, the objects will remain on loan to the Met, given the civil war in Yemen.

A recent investigation has found that more than 1,000 objects in the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York could have ties to alleged antique traffickers and looters. Many of the artefacts were acquired in the 1960s when museum staff often overlooked evidence of smuggling in an effort to source more major acquisitions than London and Paris.
