The 12 year-old boy who accidentally punched a hole in painting at an exhibition in Taipai has stumbled upon a bigger controversy.
The floral still life was being exhibited at the Huashan 1914 Creative Park as a work by the Italian artist Paolo Porpora (1617-1673). However there is speculation that the work might actually be by his contemporary, Mario Nuzzi (1603 – 1673).
An article in the Tiawanese newspaper The Apple first raised the question. Then Artnet news also detailed that its Price Database shows that what appears to be the same painting was bought in at the auction house Casa d’Aste Della Rocca, in Turin, Italy, in May 2012. It carried an estimate of €25,000-30,00. As a Porpora, the painting has an estimate of €1.3million.
The organisers of the exhibition, The Face of Leonardo, Images of a Genius, stand by their attribution.”All 55 paintings in the venue are authentic pieces and they are very rare and precious.” the organisers say on the exhibition’s official Facebook page.
It could be that more details emerge during the restoration process.
