As Brown’s London Art Weekend is less than a month away, we are delighted to announce that over the coming weeks we will be unveiling a series of walks around galleries in Mayfair and St James’s, recommended by some of the area’s most knowledgeable insiders.
Just in time for the weekend, the renowned designer shares his own personal selection of must-see Mayfair galleries…
“I’ve long had a close association with Browse and Darby on Cork Street and it’s always worth a visit. Many years ago they specialised in working with artists involved in the Slade School of Art in London, Patrick George and Euan Uglow for example who both have taught at the Slade. I’ve also supported several students from the school and in recent years the gallery has begun showing work by young artists who were taught by the likes of Patrick and Euan, which is very interesting to see. The gallery has always had a very positive feeling about it and if you’re in Cork Street there’s always lots to see nearby.
Flowers Gallery on Cork Street has been established for many, many years and they’ve always been very proactive. During the Art Weekend, they’ll be in the middle of their ‘Artist Of The Day’ exhibition, where they work with established artists to select unknown talent to show for just one day, which sounds great. It’s fantastic to see them giving new artists an opportunity to present their work right in the middle of Mayfair in a very well respected gallery. I look forward to seeing who they choose!
Connaught Brown is an absolute must. They have their Summer Exhibition on during Brown’s London Art Weekend which means works by the likes of Miró, Chagall and Picasso will be on display in the gallery. What a joy to be able to see such renowned artists in a private gallery rather than a museum.
Hauser & Wirth is a very international gallery. They have spaces in Zurich, New York, London and now Somerset and the diversity of work they show is very impressive. During the Art Weekend, Hauser & Wirth London will be showing an exhibition of work by American artist Roni Horn. Her work is very colourful and I’m sure Hauser & Wirth will put on a fantastic show!
Marlborough Fine Art gallery is just a couple of doors down from my own shop at No. 9 Albemarle St, so I’m often popping in there. They have a wonderful stable of artists so there’s always something great to see. The Kitaj exhibition they have open during the Art Weekend will be fantastic. Kitaj was at the Royal College around the same time as Hockney and a lot of the pop era artists and so his use of colour is really fantastic!”
