The Artist is P***** Off

The performance artist Marina Abramović has expressed her fury at the hip-hop mogul Jay-Z at not honouring an agreement following their 2013 collaboration ‘Picasso Baby: A Performance Art Film’, an adaption of the artist’s 2010 work ‘The Artist is Present’.

In an interview with the art publication Spike, the artist said she was angry that Jay-Z had failed to help her institute, the Marina Abramovic Institute.

Abramović said: “I am very pissed by this, since he adapted my work only under one condition: that he would help my institute. Which he didn’t.”

“In the end it was only a one-way transaction. I will never do it again, that I can say. Never. I was really naive in this kind of world. It was really new to me, and I had no idea that this would happen. It’s so cruel, it’s incredible. I will stay away from it for sure.”

The original work consisted of Abramović sitting for 736 hours in New York’s Museum of Modern Art as part of her eponymous retrospective. Members of the public queued for hours to take up a seat opposite her and stare into her eyes.

Jay-Z’s version, where he rapped his single ‘Picasso Baby’ to individuals one or two at a time was recorded at the commercial art gallery Pace in New York.  Abramović herself participated in the video.

Jay-Z has not yet commented on the situation.
